Learn more about the Great Pyrenees.
Banjo has been fostered in Utah where he was learning how to get along with canine housemates as well as people. He is a beautiful dog, quite large, with a lot to learn yet - will definitely need to go to someone willing to continue his training. This is what his foster mom just told us: This guy, Banjo has come so far in the last few months. He was terribly insecure and would go after our dogs. He broke a choke chain, chewed through so much stuff and had no manners at 100lbs and only 10 months. I truly didn't know if we could help him. Banjo is a COMPLETELY different dog now. Still a puppy at almost 12 months so he needs constant reminders that the rules are still in place. He is an amazingly sweet boy who loves people and especially kids. I thought once he was unadoptable, but with a few months of hard work on our and his part he is ready to adopted. This is why we foster. It's hard work, lots of tears, and some incredibly difficult and exhausting days, but watching Banjo just become a dog is the best thing ever. He will need an owner that is familiar and confident with the Great Pyrenees breed. ********************* These comments are directly from the foster mom and great information for potential adopters: Crate-Trained: ABSOLUTELY NOT, he panics in the crate Car: he is great in the car and loves to go for rides Swim: we have no idea Fetch: he tries but loves to get stuff to chew on Toys: yes he loves toys Lap: if we let him Protective: of his people, pretty normal for the LGD's we have had Escape: if the gate is open he will roam Predatory: we haven't seen any of that Obedient: he has great recall and will do almost anything for a treat. Much better than most LGD's Playful: very, he is really rough with the other dogs but that's how they are Timid: only with new experiences and not aggressive, he runs away Skittish: when scared Independent: he's a lot needier than most LGD's because of his history Affectionate: very Eager to please: he tries but is better with treats Even-tempered and gentle: he is incredibly gentle with young kids we babysat for a 3, 5, 7-year-old last night and he was really good but his size scared the older boy so they were locked in the laundry room. Banjo was super upset and was way better than Sadie about the personal space and being gentle with the young kids. He does way better than a young dog should with kids. Goofy: he is really silly and we laugh at his puppy antics Okay with cats: Yes but will chase if they run Great with all people may let strangers in the house if they aren't threatening Okay with dogs: I would suggest another young LGD. He loves to play with our other 2 LGD's and they all play incredibly rough. Really it's training and it looks terrible but they are all having a great time. LGD Experience: A must. He is entering his teen years and will need someone who knows how to continue to help him learn to be a good citizen. He does have some abandonment issues and doesn't like to be alone Kids: He adores kids and a family would be best for him. He was around a 3-year-old and showed incredible restraint in his excitement especially for a puppy. He was not jumping on them but was so excited to be near them. Kids are a must for Banjo. Farm animals: he is great with my geese, ducks, and goats but would need an introduction to anything else he will be homed with. Apartment: I don't think he would be happy in an apartment setting, he loves to run and explore and play. I would suggest Banjo go to a home with another big dog. He has shown a lot of anxiety at being alone especially outside at night. This has been lessened with the other dogs.
